Spoken Night

Artists, writers and philosophers present their vision of ‘mobility and identity’, the theme of this Spoken World. An evening of lectures and statements, acts and performances, films and debate. You are free to walk in and out between the various parts.

PAUL SCHEFFER
Dutch sociologist and writer. Ten years ago his controversial essay The Multicultural Drama appeared, to be followed seven years later by Land of Arrival, a study of migration and multiculturalism. For Spoken Night, Scheffer will turn the spotlight on recent (political) developments  in the Netherlands.

MARCO MARTINIELLO
Sociologist and political scientist, resident of Molenbeek. As the head of the Center for Ethnic and Migration Studies (Liège University) and as a member of the European Network of Excellence - IMISCOE (International Migration and Social Cohesion in Europe), he advocates multicultural citizenship.

SOHEILA NAJAND
Dutch-Iranian artist and advocate of a ‘new cultural citizenship’ founded on diversity and radical democracy. In her lecture-performance, she makes several personal observations on the theme of the festival.

ELS DIETVORST
Brussels-based artist. Several months ago she moved to Ireland where she is building a new life far away from the bustle of the city and her home country. She reports from her new home in several short visual montages.

EMMANUEL LAMBION
Since September 2010, B-1010 has been the postcode of the fictional twentieth borough of Brussels: Be-DIX_TIEN, a virtual community which transcends social, cultural, linguistic and territorial boundaries. Initiator Emmanuel Lambion explains the project.

SADDIE CHOUA
Moroccan-Belgian sociologist and film-maker. Presents a portrait of her family that balances between fact and fiction and between personal and political considerations. It was a photograph of her father and four uncles that sparked off this semi-biographical documentary.

TANJA OSTOJIC
In her performances and installations she exposes the limits of European migration policy. Her artistic actions are invariably politically charged and provoke the necessary controversy. She will be opening the evening at the Kaaitheater with her solo performance Integration Impossible.

ABDELKADER BENALI
Novelist, literary critic and poet. He moved from Morocco to Rotterdam as a child. He made his debut with the novel Bruiloft aan zee (1996) in which he describes his experiences as a child caught between two cultures. This theme re-emerges in De stem van mijn moeder (2009).

PETRA ARDAI & LUC VAN LOO (SPACE)
In their work, these Hungarian-Dutch theatre-makers wonder how, as a migrant, one can feel attached to the country one lives in. They also often involve the audience in their quest for answers.

BEN HAMIDOU
In Sainte-Fatima de Molem, theatre-maker Ben Hamidou tells the story of his grandmother, who was one of the first generation of Moroccan immigrants in Molenbeek. This evening you will get an early viewing: the performance can be seen in the Huis der Culturen.

THOMAS BELLINCK
Young theatre-maker. Renowned for several pointed, socially-engaged actions in public space in the hope of bringing about a change in Belgium’s rigid migration policy. Spoken Night sees him present a lecture of resistance.
