Incomprehensible
In 2006, the Swiss director Milo Rau planned to make a performance about the genocide in Rwanda. For six months he did intensive research and wrote dozens of beginnings… but in the end cancelled the production as he considered it impossible to sum up something so incomprehensible in a performance.
Only in 2010, when he completed his film The Last Days of the Ceausescus, did he see a way of dealing with the Rwandan drama: just as the room in which the Ceausescus were executed became an allegory for the fall of communism, so the studio of hate radio Mille Collines became the place from which the truth of the genocide could be told.
Based on real time broadcasts and authentic accounts, Milo Rau brings history very close to us.
• With his International Institute of Political Murder (IIPM), Milo Rau makes films and theatre productions that combine art, history and politics. His work has been presented at the Beursschouwburg, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts and the Avignon Festival. Hate Radio has been staged in fifteen countries and a TV documentary about the production has been made.
