GLOBE AROMA / IRMA FIRMA - 'HOME AND AWAY'
Together with a mixed group of expats, homeless people and refugees, the artist Ann Van de Vyvere (Irma Firma) looked for the meaning of privacy and intimacy – the foundations of the home. Because, wherever a person lives, be it in a terraced house or under a bridge, he always gathers around him a number of valuable objects to create a sense of home. The Home & away exhibition was first put together at the Jubilee Park Museum in April 2010. A group of the participants are now getting together again to exhibit their most valuable objects at the Kaaitheater. The documentary film showing the exhibitors’ stories will premiere at the Kaaitheater on Wednesday, November 24.
Guided tours: The participants guide you through the exhibition on Nov 26 from 7 to 8pm (in Dutch), on Nov 27 from 7 to 8pm (in French) and on Dec 2 from 12.30 to 1.30pm (in Dutch). Tickets are for sale at the box office at €5. Group visits can be booked on demand in Dutch, French or English: contact md@kaaitheater.be.
TANJA OSTOJIĆ - 'NAKED LIFE'
The performances and public interventions by the Serbian artist Tanja Ostojić address the theme of female migrants in the EU. In doing so, she often throws her own body into the battle. Naked Life deals with discrimination against the Roma and Sinti.
LISA VAN DAMME - 'ROMA IN GHENT'
In December last year a group of Roma were in the news because they had to spend the winter in Ghent in a Nigerian or Congolese-style slum. The young Ghent-based social photographer Lisa Van Damme compiled an incisive and respectful report on them.
ADRIAN PACI - 'CENTRO DI PERMANENZA TEMPORANEA'
The poster image for Spoken World 2010 comes from the video Centro di Permanenza Temporanea (2007) by the Milan-based Albanian artist Adrian Paci. The title refers to an Italian refugee camp. Paci often incorporates his experiences as a refugee into his videos, sculptures, installations, photographs and paintings.
