Creating the City Together

Discovering (or rediscovering) Brussels’ canal zone as the new city centre, as a metropolitan public space, as a bridge between cultures and population groups, as the place where many roads cross, as a place to be and a must-go zone! This is the mission of Festival Kanal. This has already yielded two exciting festivals full of memorable, poetic and confrontational artistic interventions.

For the third festival, Platform Kanal has, under the label Kanal Playground, summoned artists, architects, designers and residents to formulate ideas for a new image of public space in the canal zone. How can we create space to perform, demand space to transform or simply occupy space in the common interest?

In the meantime, fifteen intriguing ideas that were submitted have been developed and will be brought to a conclusion during the festival, complemented by an extensive artistic programme. The whole thing is part of the VRT Atelier de Stad project, which in the autumn will result in a full documentary on the Canvas TV channel.
