L’Etang

theatre
18—20.11.2021

Gisèle Vienne returns to Kaaitheater with a text adaptation by the Swiss writer Robert Walser (1878-1956). L'Etang (the pond) is a musical theatre play about a child who feels unloved by his mother. At the height of his despair and as an ultimate attempt to win her love, he feigns suicide in a pond. Two actresses play the mother and the neighbour, the children and teenagers of the village are embodied by seven human-sized dolls – which often appear in Vienne's work. Her partner(-in-crime) Stephen O'Malley from cult group SUN O))) is once more responsible for the music. L'Etang reveals a universe in which multiple layers of meaning and time roll over one another. The fragile order of the piece seems to suggest subcutaneous chaos.

• After studying philosophy, the Franco-Austrian theatre maker Gisèle Vienne also trained as a puppeteer. She has been creating performances since 2004, several of which have appeared at Kaaitheater: This Is How You Want Disappear, The Pyre, The Ventriloquists Convention and – most recently – the slow-motion techno performance CROWD.
