Can dance really be abstract?
With Prototype, Marc Vanrunxt creates a dance performance based on the work of the solitary Lucien Goethals (1931-2006), pioneer of Flemish electronic music. Sound designer Daniel Vanverre – with whom Marc collaborated for Discografie – manipulates the soundtracks live on stage. The result acts as a journey through time, towards what in the 1970s was still the music of the future, and which quite possibly still sounds like that now. Visual artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer – whose work was and is crucial to Marc’s practice – creates a stage setting. The pursuit of abstraction translates into a dance challenge that is as impossible as it is fascinating. How can dance really be abstract if there are always living people on stage?
• Over the past twenty years, the self-taught Marc Vanrunxt has developed an oeuvre that is full of integrity. Kaaitheater has previously programmed a number of his works, including Discografie, ZEIT and Extraction. Since 2001, visual artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer has been creating the scenography for the majority of his performances.
