In modern dance, narrative and fiction are unacceptable. It is thought they distract viewers from the real, from the materiality of the body etc. But aren’t we throwing out the baby with the bathwater? Perhaps storytelling could help us to cope with the complexity of life? With these questions in mind, choreographer Andros Zins-Browne and dancer Chrysa Parkinson created The Lac of Signs, a reinterpretation of Swan Lake (Le Lac des Cygnes).
Zins-Browne multiplies the storyline and reduces the storytellers to one body. The libretto is shaped by ignorant narrators, unauthorised characters and misleading Google searches. In this search the original story is present only implicitly. The final result is a holographic installation of a speaking, physical body that gradually disappears into its virtual double.
