Another Song

dance
19.06.2014

Twenty-two students from 14 countries are coming to the end of their four-year course at PARTS, the Brussels dance school headed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. They round off their studies with different programmes.

A group of eleven students are working for three months on a creation based on Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s piece The Song (2009), a work for eleven dancers based on the Beatles’ White Album.

The Song was created in 2009 by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François for a group of 10 dancers and one foley artist. A stage stripped to its bare elements light, sound and movement gives life to new possibilities: a playful solo in which the body seeks out its own weightlessness or a group choreography like a flock of birds in full flight, the constantly shifting patterns at the same time a sample of mathematical precision and human inventiveness. It’s a piece accompanied mostly by silence, punctuated by bursts of ‘The White Album’ by The Beatles.

This new version was directed by Sandy Williams and Eleanor Bauer who were in the original version of the piece, for 11 dancers. They revisit the piece, often replacing the original movement material with the participants’, while maintaining the existing structure so as to allow the dancers to speak their own clear language within the existing work.
