VIOLET

dance
29.09—01.10.2011

In VIOLET, Meg Stuart returns to movement as the primary motor of her
work, pairing abstraction with the personal in an alchemy of the senses.
An ensemble of five dancers embarks on a journey of more than an hour,
traversing the stage as if it were a mental landscape. The musician
Brendan Dougherty accompanies the stream of events live on electronics
and percussion.

VIOLET
is a whirl-dance whose energetic currents stir
the wavelengths of both dance and imagination. This performance
continues along the lines Meg Stuart set out in Atelier (2011), an
interim presentation for which the Kaaistudios were converted into an
all-round observatory.

Since the Brussels-based American choreographer Meg Stuart presented her
debut Disfigure Study at the Klapstuk festival (Leuven) twenty years
ago, she has become a key figure in contemporary dance. Her pieces lean
very much towards visual art and theatre. They are ‘physical sculptures’
whose gestures and movement draw an intense image of a frail ‘condition
humaine’.

Meg Stuart has been a resident artist at the Kaaitheater for
many a year. Her recent productions include Blessed (2007), a solo for
Francisco Camacho, the heart-rending love-story Maybe Forever (2007), a
duet with Philipp Gehmacher which we are reviving in January, and Do
Animals Cry
(2008), a group piece on oppressive family bonds. In the
past season, Meg Stuart was also a guest in Philipp Gehmacher’s Walk and
Talk
series.
