Marionett
To manipulate or to be manipulated
Following an absence of several years, last season the Dutch theatre collective Discordia returned to our theatre again with an intense performance on art and artistry. It was a new and unusual step in their oeuvre in which text made way for silence and visual power. This season too, Discordia will present two productions in the Kaaistudios. In Marionett they take puppet theatre as a starting point for a reflection on free will: to what extent does one allow oneself to manipulate or to be manipulated?
• Maatschappij Discordia was founded in 1982 by Jan Joris Lamers, Matthias de Koning and others. Their work opened the way for a new, more independent way of acting and a free and dynamic approach to existing plays. Discordia quotes from the full theatre repertoire: works by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Sardou, Scribe, Bernhard, Handke and others stand side by side with contemporary work by writers like Judith Herzberg and Gerardjan Rijnders. Their method has inspired many leading companies in Flanders and the Netherlands, including tg STAN, Dito’Dito, Dood Paard and ’t Barre Land.
