Speech Act by Nadia Fadil & Sarah De Mul

talk
10.10.2009

‘Speech Acts’ are short interventions (15 min.) before or after a performance. Performers, academics, writers and so on speak briefly but to the point about topics related to the theme of this Spoken Word.

1989 was also the year of the first headscarf problems in France and the founding of VTM (commercial tv-station in Flanders). These two events indicate a series of cultural developments that are closely interwoven and still define the way Flanders is today.

Sarah De Mul is a literary academic and writer. Nadia Fadil is a sociologist and current affairs writer. Both worked on the book Een Leeuw in een Kooi. The limits of multicultural Flanders, which Meulenhoff-Manteau are publishing this month. Their ‘speech act’ is a reworking of several extracts from the book.
