Poor Theatre – A Series of Simulacra
The Wooster Group is without a doubt the most exceptional theatre collective in the United States. Since 1981 the group has made regular appearances at the Kaaitheater, with productions like House/Lights (1998), North Atlantic (2000) and To you, the Birdie! (Phedre) (2002). Their performances are based on a wide range of material: classical and contemporary texts in confrontation with modern media and the personalities of the performers. The result is invariably intelligent multimedia theatre.
In Poor Theatre – A Series of Simulacra, Elizabeth LeCompte and her companions pay tribute to three icons of twentieth-century theatre practice. In the first part the performers ‘filter’ the work of Jerzy Grotowski (Poland, 1933-1999), the founder of the experimental Laboratory Theatre, who set out in search of the essence of theatre as a ritual and documented it comprehensively in essays such as Towards a Poor Theatre. In the second part they consider the iconographies of visual artist Max Ernst (1891-1976), and in the third part they get to grips with the work of the choreographer William Forsythe (New York, 1949), who was the artistic director of the former Ballett Frankfurt and together with his company created performances such as The Loss of Small Detail, In the Middle Somewhat Elevated and Eidos:Telos.
