MHMMMM
The American choreographer Jennifer Lacey appeared for the first time in the Kaaitheater studios in 1998, where, together with the composer Zeena Parkins, she presented Voice speaks. In 2001 we staged her $ Shot, for which she worked in collaboration with Zeena Parkins, the artist Nadia Lauro and others. Both productions were about how the female body is presented in the media and in the eyes of men.
MHMMMM is a new production by Jennifer Lacey and Nadia Lauro. It is built up around two elements: a trio of women and a group of extras who provide a ‘human environment’, such as a Greek choir, a cinematic background or a sound decor.
The central idea is ‘la circulation d’une intériorité’. Roughly translated this means: how notions such as the inner self and intimacy are constantly demarcated and redefined. Sources of inspiration include a reading of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible (about the Salem witch trials), personal hygiene, etc. The performance also makes both serious and ironic references to the supernatural.
