Candle Braiding: On Queering Ritual Objects

workshop
23.11.2024

Join us for a 2 hour workshop, where we will use the braiding of a traditional havdalah candle as a starting point to delve into queering of ritual objects, intersections, entanglements, breaking binaries and other symbolic meanings. Together we will learn about the Jewish ritual of separating the sacred from the everyday while making queer havdalah candles, creating ritual objects of our own.

Shoshana Walfish is a painter based between Brussels and Montreal. Her painting practice is research driven and explores world building as a way to visually approach abstract ideas such as how the body relates to queer theory and phenomenology. Her work was most recently shown at Galerie Nicolas Robert (Montreal), The Jewish Museum of Belgium (Brussels) and Kasteel D'Ursel (Antwerp).

David Bernstein (he/him, 1988, San Antonio, Texas) is an artist based in Brussels who combines performance, sculpture, and writing to tell stories through objects. His projects deal with a range of subjects: psychology, hospitality, fetishism, and spirituality. David's work is driven by "Judeo-Futurism", reclaiming historical symbols by placing them into joyful and subversive fantasies. Next to his individual practice, he collaborates with a variety of people and participates in building community at Shabbes 24/7 and at the Brussels atelier cooperative Level Five.
