The return of the Utopia
Societies change throughout time. For example, starting in the 1950s, the welfare state ensured that civilians enjoyed increasing freedom while the government provided security and stability. From the 1980s, the neoliberal market turned freedom and security into individual projects. According to Dirk Holemans, more than thirty years later, a new age is dawning: the social-ecological society. This society will tackle the paradox of our times. Freedom and security have very little to do with maintaining our current world. Transport, food production, or energy: everything will be different in the future.
Dirk Holemans will present his book Vrijheid & Zekerheid (freedom and certainty) and will discuss 'the return of the Utopia' with Tine De Moor (Prof. at Utrecht University and expert in the field of commons) and Christophe Callewaert. Guy Gypens will moderate.
Due to a scheduling conflict Tim Jackson can't attend the debate – we're planning an alternative date later this season.
