Geboeid/Prometheus

theatre
13—15.11.2015

A portrait of stubbornness

Geboeid/Prometheus is a new play by Jan Decorte, based on the tragedy Aeschylus wrote in the 5th century BC. It’s an amazing work, and a powerful and menacing portrait of stubbornness.

Prometheus steals fire from the gods and gives it to the people. Thus bringing them civilization, science and art. He also gives mortals the gift of forgetting, so that they do not foresee their own death. Not knowing brings peace. Zeus is furious and has Prometheus chained to a rock. Every day an eagle pecks at his liver. But it grows back again at night, so there is no end to his pain. But Prometheus does not bow to power. He alone knows how Zeus can be driven from his throne, but he refuses to give up his secret. The certainty that one day Zeus will need him gives him the strength not to yield.

• Jan Decorte has more than 50 productions to his name – check it out at bloet.be! Each performance is vintage Decorte, in his famous ‘childish’ language, with his ‘meagre’ staging and set design. And each performance is about Decorte himself, about man, suffering and grotesque.
