Maria Stuart

theatre
04—05.02.2015

Two women

In Friederich Schiller’s drama Maria Stuart, two legendary queens from European history are at each other’s throats: Elizabeth I of England (Chris Nietvelt) and the Catholic Mary Stuart of Scotland (Halina Reijn). Schiller wrote a chilling reconstruction of the last days of Mary Stuart. Her captivity is the culmination of a long rivalry between the two queens. Behind the masks of political power are two women of flesh and blood.

Ivo Van Hove directs a ten-member cast drawn from the companies of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and Toneelhuis. ‘I am looking forward to working with the actors from Toneelhuis and FC Bergman, a unique blend of experienced actors and iconoclasts which allows us to fill all the parts superbly, even the smallest’, says Van Hove. Following Hamlet vs Hamlet, Maria Stuart is the second production in a series of four planned for between 2014 and 2016.
