AGORA - ON RECLAIMING THE “PUBLICNESS” OF THEATRE
Public affair
In 2009 Jan Ritsema initiated AGORA, a project whose ambition is to reclaim for theatre the open, public quality it once possessed. The project first involved fourteen artists and then expanded to twenty. The working process took different forms, from conventional rehearsals to lectures, seminars and endless, heated conversations. In the meantime three theatre pieces were put together. The first one, Oidipous, my foot, was produced at the Kaaitheater in January 2011. Recently a book has been published: it’s not a report on what AGORA has been doing so far, but a projection of a possible future, a collection of raw materials in preparation for a fourth act.
Six of the participating artists will come to meet the public and discuss what AGORA is trying to say.
