I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story
In her previous pieces, Charlotte Vanden Eynde often used objects and video, coming close to the boundary of visual art. In I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story she gives shape to her associative visual idiom in pure movement and dance, and seeks out the ‘image’ and poetry of movement. She experiments with meaning and emotion, somewhere between theatricality and abstraction.
I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story requires a personal interpretation from the viewer. Anyone looking for a story will remain unsatisfied. Those who do not want to see a story remain in a state of uncertainty. This piece is a story that isn’t, yet something nevertheless takes shape… for those who want to see it.
Charlotte Vanden Eynde has been creating dance pieces, performances and video installations since 1997. She has worked with the theatre-maker Jan Decorte and played the leading part in Dorothée van den Berghe’s film Meisje.
‘The fairytale of the body is a story that has been told all too often. I’m Sorry It’s (Not) A Story nevertheless remains captivating because it is a study by a choreographer whose minimal language of movement leaves room for the imagination.’ - De Standaard
‘Charlotte Vanden Eynde’s bewildering puppet play.**** As a young girl Vanden Eynde had an authentic approach to her body, even though she treated it like a doll. But when, at the end, she takes possession of her body, conforming to the image of the self-confident woman, she truly does become a doll. Vanden Eynde shows up this paradox in the simplest but most brilliant way.’ - Pieter T’Jonck in De Morgen
