To intimate
Dance is the 'mother tongue' of Cynthia Loemij and Mark Lorimer, and music that of the cellist Thomas Luks. Their production To intimate is an exchange between the two languages, a conversation, sometimes in consonance, sometimes in dissonance, in smooth or jerky sentences, approaching or distant, in tension or relaxation, in chaos or order... similarly to the way three people talk and hope to understand each other.
To intimate draws from two musical sources: the 11 capriccios by the Brussels-born composer Joseph Marie Clement dall'Abaco (1710-1805) and 9 Serenades, very short compositions for cello by Hans Werner Henze (1926). In his playing Thomas Luks allows the two ‘musics’ to converse with each other until we no longer know where dall'Abacco becomes Henze or vice versa. Cynthia Loemij and Mark Lorimer created their phrases of movement independently of this music. They were led and inspired by the pop songs that coloured of their youth. Only later in the working process did they bring their dance into contact with the music of dall'Abacco and Henze.
