VerBELGingsfeest
Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert describes their path to Belgian citizenship as a marriage where only one partner was present to say ‘yes’. The total lack of ceremony, official welcome or congratulations inspired her to develop a ritual for new Belgians. A ceremony and festive waffle bake that welcomes new citizens and brings them together with other residents to celebrate a shared future.
The aim of verBELGingsfeest (or BELGification party) is to introduce the concept of hospitality within the state apparatus, reflecting on our contemporary citizenship. After all, you don't eat a waffle alone, do you?
• Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert (she/they) lives and works in Brussels. She studied law at Moscow State Academy of Law (2007-2011), fine arts at KASK in Ghent (2013-2017) and sociology at Ghent University (2017-2024). These diverse backgrounds in law, visual arts and sociology form the basis of their artistic practice and influence both the content and form of their work. As a multidisciplinary artist, Anyuta works at the intersection of visual art, in situ performance, theatre and participatory art. Their work explores intimacy through hyper-personal reflections, constantly questioning the boundary between private and public, the individual and the collective.
