Dance #2

dance
performance
23—23.04.2016

From throat-singing to ping-pong

With Dance # 2 Christine De Smedt and Eszter Salamon continue to build on Dance # 1 / Driftworks. The first part – listening & mouthing – was inspired by Inuit throat-singing duets. The dancers challenge each other in a word game in which meanings slowly dissipate. In part two – words & gestures – a dialogue develops in which syllables and words become attached to movements. What does a choreography look like when it resembles a ping-pong game of question and answer?

• Christine De Smedt was a member of Les Ballets C. de la B. from 1991 to 2012. She has worked with people such as Meg Stuart, Xavier Le Roy and Mette Ingvartsen. In May 2014, together with Bojana Cvejic, she presented the spatial choreography Spatial Confessions in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Eszter Salamon has also been a frequent guest at the Kaaitheater, in productions including Giszelle (2005) which she created together with Xavier Le Roy, and Magyar Tàncok, a performance with live Hungarian folk music. This season, she also presents MONUMENT 0: Haunted by Wars (1913-2013) in the Kaaitheater’s concert hall.
