Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society
Radical discussions
In her work Grace Schwindt often deals with historical events and social relations. She also interweaves fiction and non-fiction. In her film Only a Free Individual Can Create a Free Society (2014) she evokes discussions that she witnessed in her youth in Frankfurt, while growing up in a left-wing environment. The text, which is variously incorporated in the film, is based on an interview with an activist from the 1960s and 1970s student movement. The film also shows a dance troupe performing a piece that obeys a strict rhythm of rest and motion. The multidisciplinary approach used by Schwindt allows her to deal with subjects from various different perspectives thus avoiding a one-sided interpretation.
