Shevolution!
A debate on women and protest
What role do women actually play in today’s protest movements? If women want to make their voice heard, can they do so as part of existing protest movements or do they have to start their own? Do women have to bare their breasts to bring about change?
Kirsten van den Hul (The Change Agent, author of (S)hevolution) will talk to Petra de Vries (historian), Ann-Sofie Dekeyser (journalist on De Standaard, spent five months undercover in the Belgian branch of Femen), Amina Sboui (Tunisian, former Femen activist; her book Mon corps m’appartient will be published soon) and Begüm Özden Firat (Turkish cultural sociologist and activist, who took part in Istanbul’s Gezi park protests) about the historical (r)evolutionary development of women in protest movements, such contemporary movements as Femen and women’s contribution to the Arab Spring.
