Solid Gold & Jolie

dance
09—10.06.2011

The roots of hip hop

The Brussels-Canadian choreographer Ula Sickle has created solos for, and together with, two dancers from Kinshasa, Dinozord and Jolie Ngemi.

Solid Gold, danced by Dinozord, draws from his background in hip hop, tracing an alternative dance history that passes through styles as diverse as traditional African dance and early Broadway entertainment to more recent dances sampled from MTV and the internet. The second solo, Jolie, stays in the present, while looking towards the future. Popular dance sampled from Congolese music videos and nightclubs is the main source of inspiration.
Musician Yann Leguay creates a live sound track for both pieces using the sounds produced by the dancers themselves - their voices, footsteps and breath.
