Iraq, war on Culture
The young Iraqi theatre maker Mokhallad Rasem (28) left Baghdad and came to Belgium in 2006. He is literally a man of many wars, as his generation has known little else. The son of one of Iraq’s most famous actors, he completed his studies in acting and directing and worked at the National Theatre in Baghdad for more than five years. In 2010 his first major project in Belgium, Iraqi Ghosts, was selected for the Theatre Festival and earned him the title of Laureate at Theater Aan Zee ‘for the skill and drive with which a personal experience is made communicable through images that are both ambiguous and striking’.
