Mophradat - Read the Room Festival

Read the Room is the premiere edition of a biennial collaboration between Mophradat and Kaaitheater which takes the form of a three-day multi-disciplinary festival that’s looking in at the art community, and in different formats explores questions that we should be collectively asking ourselves as artists and publics. The title “Read the Room” is a forceful and humorous expression implying a need to be confronted or nudged out of complacency - in essence the project highlights where and how we get stuck in norms. Looking back at our last two years of reflection, the notion of “mother” with all its tangled territories (motherhood, tongues, nature, land…), acts as the theme of this edition of the festival. Hinted at, reflected upon, addressed head-on, “mother” comes in and out of these newly commissioned projects.

The program is anchored around six newly commissioned monologues and dialogues by Dina Mimi, Karim Kattan, Lina Soualem, Mohammad Shawky Hassan, Noor Alsamarrai, and Sahar Mandour, and adapted by artist Noor Abed for a live staging. Also presented are Mary Jirmanus Saba collaborates with Natasha Soobramanien and Alexandre Paulikevitch on an audio-visual talk, Alaa Abu Asad and Bekriah Mawasi explore what language engenders for and between them, and Geo Wyeth continues his poetic attempt at throwing the past into the future. Anouchka Oler Nussbaum, Dirar Kalash, and Nile Sunset Annex each teach the audience a skill they’ve found useful to their practices. And two evenings close with new musical performances by Bint Mbareh and Deena Abdelwahad with Aya Metwalli, the former to bring us to sleep and the latter to the complete opposite. 

Mophradat, founded in 2004 in Brussels, is an organization that creates opportunities for artists from the Arab world through an inventive approach to funding, commissioning, collaborating, and gathering, with imaginative and ambitious, inclusive and hospitable ways of working. Mophradat recognizes the Arab world as a loosely-defined geography that is called home by people of diverse ethnicities, gender identities, religions, ideologies, and languages.

يشكل «جس نبض» النسخة الأولى لمهرجان متعدد المجالات تنظمه «مفردات» بالتعاون مع «مسرح كاي» سيُجرى كل سنتين على مدى ثلاثة أيام. يعاين برنامج تلك الفعالية المجتمع الفنّي بصيغ مختلفة ليحاكي أسئلة لا بد أن نطرحها على أنفسنا بشكل جماعي بصفتنا نعمل في الفنّ ونتلقّاه. العنوان «جس نبض» عبارة حادة وظريفة في آنٍ واحد، تشمل ضرورة المواجهة والتّحرّك بدل الاستسلام للتراخي المريح - يسلط هذا المشروع في مضمونه على أين تحصرنا الأنماط وكيف. بناءً على ما شغل فكرنا في السنتين الماضيتين، سيكون مفهوم الـ”أم “بجميع تشعّباته المتشابكة (الأمومة واللغة والطبيعة الأم والوطن الأم) محور هذه النسخة من المهرجان. الـ"أم" هو ما تنبعث منه المشاريع المكلفة الجديدة وتستقطبه، سواء بالإشارة إليه أو معالجته أو مخاطبته مباشرةً.

يرتكز هذا البرنامج على ستّة مونولوغات وحوارات بقلم دينا الميمي وسحر مندور وكريم قطّان ولينا سوالم ومحمد شوقي حسن ونور السامرائي، أعدّتها الفنانة نور عابد لقراءة مسرحية. في البرنامج كذلك تعمل ماري جرمانوس سابا بالتعاون مع نتاشا سوبرامانيين وألكسندر بوليكيفيتش على حديث سمعي بصري، وتستكشف بكريّة مواسي وعلاء أبو أسعد ما تخلقه اللغة من أجلهما وما بينهما، بينما يستمرّ جيو وياث في محاولته الشعرية لرمي الماضي نحو المستقبل. أمّا أنوشكا أولر نوسباوم وضرار كلش و«ملحق غروب على النيل» فيعلّم كلّ منهنّ-م الجمهور مهارةً ما تـ-يجدها كلّ منهنّ-م مفيد في الممارسة الفنية. نختتم أمسيتين من الثلاث بحفلتين موسيقيتين لـ"بنت مبارح" ودينا عبد الواحد بمرافقة آية متولّي، الأولى لتهدئتنا حتى النوم والثانية لتفعل العكس، فتوقظنا.
