Festival

In CITY:LAND, we’re leaving our theatre halls and taking to the streets. The focus is on the city itself, as a shared space in a divided world. In a series of artistic and participatory projects, we explore ways of dealing with this shared, public space. How can we live together on the basis of cultural difference? How do we interact with growing informal networks? How do we combine an urban existence with a sustainable relationship with our natural environment? And how do we develop local spheres of influence in a globalized, interdependent world?

Every season, CITY:LAND chooses a specific location as a temporary base of operations. The first edition is based on and around the Place de la Monnaie during the week leading up to the local elections. Each edition also focuses on one of our artists-in-residence. This year, Michiel Vandevelde is presenting his Precarious Pavilions #2.

Precarious Pavilions #2 – the new local

Michiel Vandevelde

Artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater Michiel Vandevelde is touring four cities with his Precarious Pavilions. In each city, he builds a pavilion with a different artist, each time asking the question: ‘How do we deal with space and architecture in this unstable world?’ For his second pavilion in Brussels, choreographer Michiel Vandevelde and the collective 431 are coming to the Place de la Monnaie.

Crazy But True (8+)

Children have an insatiable hunger for unusual facts and trivia of the ‘crazy but true’ type. In the performance, children between the ages of eight and eleven form a panel of experts. A text is whispered to them via headsets. They repeat what they hear, and thus present a growing list of extraordinary facts.

The Reign of Afropeanism

Roland Gunst and Sibo Kanobana sketch a picture of the African presence in Europe and present an alternative version both of history and of the future. Their work is based in Afropeanism: an anti-essentialist attitude that seeks to transcend the divide between African and Europe through encounter and exchange. Do ‘black’ and ‘white’ people not have a common past, present and future?

Instant Fiction

The live video installation Instant Fiction films everyday situations in public places, following the principles of security systems. The difference is that this footage is supplied with subtitles in real time, taken from the scripts of a wide range of different films. Contemporary reality thus transforms into a set with actors who are completely unaware.

The Blank Placard Dance, replay

Anne Collod / Anna Halprin

A day before the municipal elections, a parade of people dressed in white marches through Brussels. They wear white placards with no slogans. American choreographer Anna Halprin created Blank Placard Dance in 1967 as a protest against the Vietnam War. Anne Collod recreates this performance with participants from Brussels.

Over a period of 22 hours, you investigate texts about the relationship between body definitions and environments through bodies. By reading, listening, moving, dancing, and sleeping to feminist, queer, and occult voices, your bodies create a heterotopian space, a parallel reality at Place de la monnaie. How does the (non-)definition of what a body is impact its relationship with the environment?
