She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore

dance
26.04.2026

She Spells Sea Shells on the Shea Sore is an ongoing choreographic research by Júlia Rúbies Subirós that investigates the sonic pathways of the feminised voice in Western culture. Combining dance and voice, the work moves through a constellation of figures—Echo, Cassandra, the siren, Medusa, Ophelia—archetypes that have long shaped how women’s voices are heard, dismissed, or pathologized.

Rather than fixed characters, these figures appear as shifting presences passing through an unstable narrator, emerging through movement, breath, speech, and song. Through dance, voice and sound, the work opens a space where inherited figures are inhabited, fractured and re-sounded, revealing both the violence embedded within them and their latent disruptive force.

This public sharing marks the end of a research phase and the transition towards production, offering a glimpse into a work still in formation.

Júlia Rúbies Subirós is a dancer, performer, and choreographer based in Brussels. Originally from Barcelona, she began her training in Spain before continuing her studies in the United States. She later moved to Belgium to study at P.A.R.T.S., graduating in 2019, and completed a BA in Dance at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp in 2020. Alongside her own artistic research, she works internationally as a performer. She has maintained a long-term collaboration with choreographer Mette Ingvartsen and has also worked with artists including Michiel Vandevelde, Ian Kaler, Alix Eynaudi, and Georgia Vardarou. Alongside her performance work, Rúbies Subirós also develops practices in writing, teaching, and collective research. She has been involved in Brussels-based initiatives such as Accompany Class, MOTA000BXL, and co-organises Cascades in Barcelona, a workshop series and intergenerational space for collective learning and artistic experimentation.
