De Weiblicher Akt speelt de ander (v.)

theatre
28.11.2024

After twelve volumes in which Maatschappij Discordia mirrored themselves to female characters and authors (such as Susan Sontag, Elfriede Jelinek, ...) and in which they tried to rewrite history where necessary, in volume 13 of the Weiblicher Akt, they embark on a search for 'the other' via 'the other story'. That is the story that is not only 'different' because it is told from a different sex, but also from a different gender, culture or social class. During this search for this other story, they run the risk of getting so lost in all the stories and theories about stories that the whole 'otherness' seems to dissolve into it...

It is, among others, based on The 36 Dramatic Situations by Georges Polti, The Unlived Life by Adam Philips and Holding Space by Aminata Cairo.

"What a relief, to see actors having such genuine and infectious fun thinking out loud." — NRC

"In the face of the other, I am made. Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995) With that sentence as a common thread, the actors in the play attempt to convey in a constantly meandering, sometimes inimitable and often witty narrative the other. — Volkskrant

Maatschappij Discordia is a collective of emancipated actors that for decades has been performing at Kaaitheater and is back in Brussels with two performances. The company was single-handedly responsible for the renewal of text theatre in the Low Countries; they introduced a thinking play in the moment, the use of costumes and designer fashions, furniture and objects and an inquisitive, questioning and open text treatment.  We are certainly looking forward to their lively and playful work.
