In DISQUIET – sensational aesthetics of a technokin, Lisa Vereertbrugghen digs into the tendencies for disruption and dystopia that permeate some of the different subgenres of hardcore techno like gabber, hardstyle, jungle and drum ‘n bass. All these sounds are marked by an intensified bass and drum, a minimum speed of 160 BPM and a tendency for disruption of the flow. Focussing on these sonic ruptures, pauses and bursts, DISQUIET explores how they can inform and stimulate the body. Dancing hardcore is presented as a break from structure, providing a space for invention and emergence of an alternative elsewhere, an ‘otherwise’ that disturbs, jolts, scrambles and disorganises the established order. A place for reconfiguration.
• Lisa Vereertbrugghen has been researching hardcore techno sound and dance styles since 2014, through different formats in between sound, performance and installation. She also works as a dramaturg, performer and choreographer for various performance and visual artists in Brussels, Berlin and Amsterdam and she teaches at the Académie Royale de Beaux Arts.
