The Divine Cypher

dance
10—11.02.2022

Ana Pi returns to Kaaitheater with a performative and cinematic creation on Haitian sacred dances. In The Divine Cypher, she enters into a dialogue with the twentieth-century experimental filmmaker Maya Deren. She has dedicated seven years of her life to the observation of Haitian culture and dances within the voodoo heritage. She has produced several books and films, including The Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti. Almost 80 years later, Ana Pi goes in search of the ordinary gestures and sacred dances filmed by Maya. This is followed by a fantasised dialogue between the two artists.

The Divine Cypher pays tribute to the life of popular cultures, public spaces and the mysteries of the invisible. The pioneering gestures of the Voodoo and Candomblé religious cultures are highlighted: their rhythmic and circular choreographies can be considered as precursors of the cyphers that are present today in street dances. Ana Pi embodies these ancestral movements and updates them, weaving the past, the present and the future.

•  Ana Pi is a choreographic and image artist, urban dance researcher, extemporary dancer and teacher. Currently associated choreographer at MAC VAL, and at La Briqueterie - CDCN, for the European project Dancing Museums: The Democracy of Beings. In 2020, she received a grant from MOMA for her project The Divine Cypher in Haiti. She creates documentaries as well as several shows (including Le Tour du Monde des Danses Urbaines, already seen at Kaaitheater).
