Mourning, Commemoration & New Rituals
On the eve of the second anniversary of the Brussels bombings, we’re bringing together three experts on mourning. After Anders Breivik’s bloodbath in Norway, Jone Salomonsen founded a research group on new rituals as a reaction to attacks. Kristin Verellen – who lost her partner in the Brussels attacks – talks about her circle gatherings that aim to foster a culture of togetherness and dialogue. And architect Koen Van Synghel discusses (temporary) mourning monuments.
Moderated by Lisbeth Imbo.
• Jone Salomonsen is Professor of Theology at the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo. She's the author of Enchanted Feminism: Ritual, Gender and Divinity Among the Reclaiming Witches of San Francisco (Routledge, 2002), and currently Director of 'Reassembling Democracy: Ritual as Cultural Resource', including Breivik's trial as ritual and the relationship between ritual and democracy.
