Ed et ses trois fils adultes se réunissent pour fêter Noël. Autour d’un repas composé de plats chinois à emporter et copieusement arrosé, ça bavarde et plaisante joyeusement jusqu’à ce qu’une question quasi existentielle soit évoquée : en tant qu’homme blanc hétérosexuel, on est privilégié, mais on n’en a pas conscience et c’est peut-être là que réside le plus grand privilège. Que se passe-t-il quand on perd ce privilège ?
Avec Straight White Men, la créatrice new-yorkaise de théâtre Young Jean Lee s’aventure sur le terrain du théâtre classique, « naturaliste », mais même dans ce registre, elle reste rebelle, critique et spirituelle. La pièce fait vaguement écho à Mort d’un commis voyageur d’Arthur Miller, qui portait à la scène les conflits moraux de la classe moyenne blanche dans l’Amérique de l’après-guerre. La pièce de Young Jean Lee pose les valeurs de notre société néo-libérale sur la table de dissection ainsi que notre lutte avec toutes les formes possibles d’identité – éthique, sociale ou sexuelle.
Straight White Men figurait en tête des listes de fin d’année des critiques des théâtres new-yorkais.
• En mai 2012, l’américano-coréen Young Jean Lee était à l’affiche du Kaaitheater avec Untitled Feminist Show, un spectacle extraordinaire dans lequel elle met à mal, avec beaucoup d’humour, toutes sortes de clichés sur l’identité (sexuelle).

Straight White Men was co-commissioned by the Public Theater, the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University, Center Theater Group, Steirischer Herbst Festival, Festival d’Automne à Paris, and Les spectacles vivants du Centre Pompidou. It was produced by Young Jean Lee's Theater Company (Young Jean Lee, Artistic Director; Aaron Rosenblum, Producing Director).
