Ed en zijn drie volwassen zonen komen samen om kerst te vieren. Bij een hap van de afhaalchinees en de nodige drank wordt er vrolijk geleuterd en gedold tot een bijna existentieel probleem ter sprake komt: als blanke heteroseksuele man ben je geprivilegieerd maar je beseft het niet en misschien is dat laatste wel het grootste privilege. Wat gebeurt er als je dat privilege kwijtspeelt?
Met Straight White Men begeeft de New Yorkse theatermaakster Young Jean Lee zich op het terrein van het klassieke, ‘naturalistische’ theater, maar ook dan blijft ze tegendraads, kritisch en geestig. Het stuk is een verre echo van Dood van een handelsreiziger van Arthur Miller, dat de morele conflicten van de blanke middenklasse in het naoorlogse Amerika ten tonele voerde. Met haar stuk legt Young Jean Lee de waarden van onze neoliberale maatschappij op de snijtafel en ons gevecht met alle mogelijke vormen van identiteit – etnisch, sociaal of seksueel.
Straight White Men stond hoog op de eindejaarslijstjes van de New Yorkse theaterrecensenten.
• In mei 2012 was de Amerikaans-Koreaanse Young Jean Lee te gast met haar Untitled Feminist Show, een geweldige voorstelling waarin zij met veel humor allerlei clichés over (seksuele) identiteit onderuithaalde.

Straight White Men was co-commissioned by the Public Theater, the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University, Center Theater Group, Steirischer Herbst Festival, Festival d’Automne à Paris, and Les spectacles vivants du Centre Pompidou. It was produced by Young Jean Lee's Theater Company (Young Jean Lee, Artistic Director; Aaron Rosenblum, Producing Director).
