"Who are the ancestors that shaped you? To whom are you indebted? Are they alive or not, are they people who belong to your family circle, or not?" These are the questions that writer Layla F. Saad asks every time she starts a conversation with guests in her podcast Become a Good Ancestor.

What does it mean for a theatre to not be able to use its normal residence in a city? What will it learn by sharing the working conditions of other places? No longer being a 'centre' (of art) that everyone is gravitating towards but itself having to move, what impact will this have on its programme, the artists, the audiences?

This last session in our Series of More-Than-Human Encounters #2 was entirely devoted to oceanic storytelling in kinship with hydrofeminism. This form of feminism is particularly sensitive towards watery creatures and our solidarity with them. It is also inspired by music and song-making practice – songings –, believing them to be a means of interspecies community creation and resistance.

The northern quarter of Brussels is undergoing huge transformations - yet it is very unclear for the inhabitants and social organisations of the neighbourhood what exactly is going to happen (when), and who is behind it. Wouter De Raeve and Lietje Bauwens attempted to give an overview (and interpretation) of all the public and private plans that are projected onto the area. On 10 sept 2021, they presented the booklet Le Quartier Nord, une collection d’histoires at Kaaitheater. Get a sneak peek or discover the online version.

The programme from January to June announces the last moments of our time together here in this house by Sainctelette square. For almost thirty years, Kaaitheater has been inhabiting this place with visions, movements and ideas on stage. Thirty years of history and yet in six months time, this building will be closed for major renovations and over the next season, most of what we will see will be torn-down walls, rubble and reinforced concrete structures.

But a construction site is also beautiful. It heralds new beginnings.

A Second Series of More-Than-Human Encounters #1. During this evening we will focus on tendrilesque writing. What happens to human speech if vines enter our flesh, roots crawl through our veins, and we turn into hybrid plant monsters? What happens if we let plants speak through us and what kind of new language, new bits of knowledge and new worlds can emerge from there? We will explore these topics while focusing on the status of women, and their relation to plants, as presented in works of fiction in which the distinction between women and plants becomes blurry.
