Kaaitheater spreads out
Due to extensive renovations, Kaaitheater is temporarily leaving its building on the Sainctelettesquare at the beginning of July. From September 2022 onwards, we will be taking our programming on tour: Kaaitheater will explore new territories and lands in theatres in and around Brussels. Kaaitheater sees this period as a time of sowing, of slow growth, of new audiences, experiments and pilot projects, of strengthening networks and trying out ways of working that can later be translated into the new building.
These are the venues we will cooperate with in the coming years: KVS, Charleroi danse/La Raffinerie, Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles, Rosas Performance Space, Ancienne Belgique, Bronks, Atelier 210, de Hallen van Schaarbeek, Théâtre Varia, CC Westrand/Dilbeek, CC Strombeek and CC De Factorij/Zaventem. With the latter three, Kaaitheater presents six productions a year as part of PeriferiK.
Kaaitheater continues to present its programme in Kaaistudio's and has also found a temporary stage at the Kriekelaar. Our offices will be located in the adjacent buildings of the Kriekelaar.
Kaaitheater in 2025
In 2025, we will return to the Sainctelettesquare. There we will start a new story, a unique site for the performing arts in Brussels and Flanders with five different types of spaces in one location: a renovated large auditorium for 700 people, a small auditorium for 200 people, two large rehearsal studios, a monumental multipurpose room that is suitable for receiving classes and other audiences, and a city balcony where open-air presentations can take place. With a café that wants to be hospitable and approachable, serving tasty and healthy food and being a meeting place in the daytime, evenings and sometimes at night.
The new chapter for the Kaaitheater building also heralds a new chapter for Kaaistudio's. From 2025 onwards, we will no longer work with a programme but instead be entirely focused on residencies.
Until the end of June, you can visit an exhibition in the foyer of Kaaitheater showing the plans for the renovated building. On 8 July we will move out of the Kaaitheater building. The start of the works is planned after the summer holidays
