How to Live and Work Now? In the Arts and Beyond.

Nieuws
01.12.20

An open platform. Learning from each other together.

These times demand something new: a radical revolution.

Kaaitheater is therefore cancelling its scheduled live programme until 16 April. The cycle of announcements, waiting, cancellations and reimbursements is no longer tenable. Neither for the artists, the team, nor for you: our audience. We support the perspective of SOTA (State of the Arts), which has appealed to the Flemish Government to implement more flexible measures and the possibility of launching pilot projects around sustainable artistic formats and working models.

What are we doing instead? We are using the time that has become available to reflect on what we do, how we do it, and what can change. If we want to develop alternative models for life and work, we need time, space, money and energy. We are therefore transforming from a theatre into a platform. While thinking, speaking and working, we will dive into the depths of research, looking for opportunities to continue sharing as much as possible.

The platform offers something for all those involved in our operations:

for the audience: online programme. During this period, we will present a limited online programme, comprising Zoom workshops, thematic lecture series, and a narrative podcast. Who knows, but this might also include last-minute performances announced last-minute: online or in the auditorium. If the measures are favourable, this may still be possible.

for artists and colleagues: working groups. During this period, major social issues (about solidarity, basic income, productivity…) affect discussions within the arts sector. What about fair practice, international cooperation, and the availability of buildings during a crisis? Artists, the Kaai team and colleagues in the field will take the time to zoom in on these kinds of questions.

for artists: residencies. An enthusiastic group of artists will start experimenting in our halls and rehearsal spaces or elsewhere. They will ruminate on different ways of working and living: how can you develop an artistic practice when there is no live audience? Output is not required, but it is permitted! We are open to all formats: a very long residency, a publication residency, a residency at specific locations… At the end of the platform period, we will organize interviews to keep you informed about the results and new insights.

Keep an eye on our channels and discover how these initiatives will unfold over the coming months.
