Gender-inclusive Dutch

Nieuws
23.06.25

Since 2023, Kaaitheater has worked with Bye Bye Binary on a project around (gender)inclusive language. This Brussels-based collective of typographers and designers has been working on making French more inclusive for a long time. The collective has developed fonts and ligatures for various French-language theatres that make communication as innovative as it is inclusive.

This work inspired us – and other Dutch-language cultural centres – start doing something similar with Dutch, a very different (and differently gendered) language from French. In our workshops – along with writers, linguists, and people active in the cultural sector – we worked on, contemplated, and played with language, based on the needs of gender-diverse people.

We presented the results of this process to a wider audience on Thursday 20 March 2025 in the Beursschouwburg. These pages show a few of those typographic interventions, designed by Bye Bye Binary, in response to our brainstorming. For a full overview of the strategies, you can scan the QR code.

With many thanks to Amber, Camille, Enz@, Hanne, noï, Vief, and all our other allies during this process. We will continue to contemplate and experiment with inclusive language within and outside the cultural sector. Are you also working on this subject? We would love to hear more about it via comms@kaaitheater.be
