Rétrospective
This is Jérôme Bel’s twentieth production. The majority of his nineteen previous works were performed at Kaaitheater. With productions like Jérôme Bel, Le dernier spectacle, The show must go on, or the recent Gala, Bel has had an enormous influence on the development of the performing arts since the early 90s. For once, Bel is not exploring new avenues, but is looking back. Rétrospective is a subjective reflection on his own work. Bel chose a variety of dance fragments from his video archive. Through meticulous editing, he has used them to reconstruct the development of his thinking about dance. By emphasizing the links between dance and politics, he foregrounds central themes in his work (body, language, culture, power, vulnerability…). The twentieth Bel is one without the live presence of performers. After the film screening, there will be an extended conversation with the choreographer. Although Jérôme Bel's company no longer travels by plane for ecological reasons, the film medium of Rétrospective allows for an international tour.
