Taking as his starting point a fictional character who became famous through the Disney animated film – the famous hunchback of Notre-Dame – artist No Anger deconstructs the imagery surrounding this iconic figure by using his own body. How can one appropriate an image whilst simultaneously undermining the norms that this image conveys? How do you expose the imagination and social logic inherent in this image, whilst also redefining the way we view the disabled body?

From the experience in front of the mirror to the stage, dance becomes a means of freeing oneself from constraints. To utilise the body’s potential. To give expression to the dizzying aspects of identification. In a performance that takes the form of a reclamation, No Anger sets out to reinvent itself and broaden our perception: that of a body in all its states, one that subverts norms and affirms the plasticity of being – beyond alienating images and dominant narratives.

Through an artistic practice that brings together video art, performance and literary writing, No Anger challenges the ways in which bodies are expressed and displayed. Words and images, which form part of a shared language and imaginative world and are imbued with power relations, convey a worldview that legitimises certain realities over others, thereby creating a hierarchy amongst bodies.
