Jubel
The YouYou Group is named after the youyou, a shrill trill sound called 'zaghareed' in Arabic that brightens up festive occasions with its own timbre. Thanks to this ancient vocal technique, the group has developed its own sound palette around the female voice and its ability to occupy and transform a space. The YouYou Group's compositions - whether performance, film or installation - are known far beyond Brussels for an extraordinary force of expression.
In Jubel, the performers draw inspiration from symbiotic relationships that humans traditionally maintained with sheep. The bleating of these animals and the choreographic lines of flocks and their shepherds return with a twist. It thus becomes a contemporary pastoral in a time in search of balance.
"Their shrill voices filled the spaces, first hidden under shaggy shepherd's cloaks and then raised freely with body and soul into true vocal art." (Roger Creijf in Klassiek Centraal following the premiere of Jubel at Concertgebouw Brugge on 3 March 2024)
With Jubel, the group celebrates its tenth anniversary. After the performance, we invite the audience to celebrate together.
• YouYou Group started as a collective effort to understand how a specific use of voice can instantly create a sense of belonging and community. Through various techniques related to the youyou or trill cry, the group brings deeply vibrant vocal performances that thrill spaces and audiences. The group now brings its engaging approach with a ritualistic slant to the theatre.
