HAMEL

Deep Time River

performance
06—07.11.2024

The hall lights are still on when the sound of trickling, rippling water slowly fills the room. What follows is a musically intense and visually poetic performance that moves among and around the audience.

In HAMEL, YouYou Group starts in the 13th century fairy tale about Pied Piper of Hamelin. The Pied Piper exterminated the rats in the troubled town of Hamelin with the power of music, but then used the same trick to kidnap the children when his fee was not paid.

This vocal performance turns the river where the rats drowned into the protagonist which flows through the solid theatre architecture in the performers' voices. YouYouGroup delves into enchanting musical practices as instruments and connects them with a powerful and pared-down stage design.

• YouYou Group started as a collective effort to understand how a specific use of voice can instantly create a sense of belonging and community. Through various techniques related to the youyou or trill cry, the group brings deeply vibrant vocal performances that thrill spaces and audiences. The group now brings its engaging approach with a ritualistic slant to the theatre.

Each YouYou Group creation builds on the practices the group has developed and nurtured since its start in 2014, thanks to all its members.
