Revolution and Solidarity This Time

talk
debate
online
13.01.2021

a conversation with Miriyam Aouragh, Nadia Fadil, Annie Olaloku-Teriba & Vijay Prashad.
moderated by Omar Jabary Salamanca.

For their 10th anniversary, De Wereld Morgen looks back on the last decade of revolts and the role of solidarity, in collaboration with MENARG. From the Arab uprisings, over the Greek revolts, the Indignados, the Occupy movements, to the Black Lives Matters movement, and Indigenous resistance from Canada to Chile, these and other struggles captured our imagination even as they were gradually overshadowed by state and global powers’ violent responses.

Any attentive onlooker can observe a rise in authoritarianism, increasing intrusions of fundamental rights, and rising proto-fascist populist movements. Despite all these forms of political repression, the fire keeps burning from Sudan and India to the US. Revolution is after all a structure – and not an event. High time to look back and forward.

• De Wereld Morgen is an independent media platform that grew out of Indymedia. Animated by a common struggle against colonial capitalism, racism and patriarchy, it works to create a democratic society together with a broad network of volunteers and citizen journalists. Housed at Ghent University, the Middle East and North Africa Research Group (MENARG) is a leading research group for the study of the politics, society, economy and culture of the contemporary Middle East and North Africa and its diaspora.
