THE CHAMBERLAIN Oh!
THE KING What do these chivalrous interventions in the world of objects mean?
THE CHAMBERLAIN I am just walking around making everything a little…
THE KING A little what?
THE CHAMBERLAIN Making everything a little more complicated.

Gombrowicz enters an arena

The young Ghent-based theatre company Tibaldus is presenting Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy (1935) by the Polish avant-garde author Witold Gombrowicz. As a joke, Prince Philip becomes engaged to the repulsive Yvonne, throwing the royal family and the entire court into chaos. Yvonne herself remains the linchpin around whom a tangle of machinations and revelations occur. She rarely speaks and thus holds up a mirror to everyone else. The performance area is a circle on the stage. As a viewer, you enter this arena in which a veritable battle unfolds. In the hands of these young performers, Gombrowicz’s absurd universe gets a fresh and playful update!

• Timeau De Keyser, Hans Mortelmans and Simon De Winne met when they were studying drama together at the KASK in Ghent, and they founded Tibaldus in 2009. Since then, they have collaborated with artists in a range of disciplines. With this production, we are welcoming them to the Kaaitheater for the first time.

The combination of Gombrowicz’s Yvonne and the poetics of Tibaldus is a match made in heaven. Both for the performers and the audience. This is an ideal union of the absurdity of Gombrowicz and Tibaldus’ zest for performance.'– E-TCETERA
