Living the Image
Workspacebrussels is a workspace for new live arts in their most diverse forms. During their biannual festival Working Title Situation they invite you to discover some of the most intriguing new formats and projects artists develop in the field of performance and installation art. For this edition they occupy an empty metal factory in Ixelles. At the end of June they set up camp in the city centre with Beursschouwburg to explore the grounds of Tour&Taxis in collaboration with ParckFarm.
Under the title Living the Image, artists make tangible the ways in which we interact with the imagery that surrounds us. Why do certain images attract us? How do images influence us? When does our imagination come into the game? And are our imagination, perception and reality as separated as we might think they are? Come and celebrate the spirit of discovery, over two weekends of performances, installations, workshops, concerts and inspiring encounters.

Rodrigo Sobarzo – A P N E A (40')
Rodrigo Sobarzo (SNDO, Jan Van Eyck Academy) develops a unique language between physical performance and visual art. With A P N E A he has created a sensual performance installation in which visual, auditive and tactile phenomena seamlessly connect. A play of light, sound and movement results in a space in which all the elements are so present that they immerse the audience.

Fernando Belfiore – DEU$/exM4CHIN4 (40')
DEU$/exM4CHIN4 investigates our fantasies about a miraculous rescue from the things that threaten us. Fernando Belfiore (SNDO) uses this theatrical term to explore the powers in a performance that can induce an experience of true change. Different modes of engagement with the audience, the power of the body and of machinery, and stretching the limits of theatricality become a starting point for a choreography that balances between the epic, sciencefiction and a ritual.

Tamago – Jija Sohn (30')
Tamago is a spectacular solo that begins as a static image and ends with an overwhelming bang. In a physical choreography accompanied by uplifting beats, seemingly inconsistent elements trigger your imagination in various directions. Jija Sohn (SNDO) takes you on a trip between different realities, between the physical and the virtual, kitsch and the concrete. A roller coaster, a fight and a lullaby at the same time.

Emmanuel Van der Auwera – A Certain Amount of Clarity (40')
With his performance installation A Certain Amount of Clarity, Emmanuel Van der Auwera (HISK) investigates the other side of the image: the position of the onlooker and how we are drawn into certain kinds of imagery. The performance takes the phenomena of gore movies as a starting point, and consists of subtle reenactments of user testimonies posted on the internet. In a very precise yet poetic manner, a hidden dimension of images is unveiled: how we experience them and how they reflect our deepest fears and desires.

Katharina Smets – Detroit Detour (40')
Detroit, once the world capital of the car industry, is now merely a detour to be avoided. The once booming city has become a ghost town known for its high crime rate. But it looks like something is changing in the vast voids amidst the city. Documentary maker Katharina Smets wanders through the urban landscape. Amidst the ruins left behind by capitalism at its peak, she discovers unexpected beauty. Katharina shares her experience in an imaginative audio performance in the dark.

The Reflecting Pool is a mix between an exhibition, a reading corner, a museum shop and a living room. Not only does it gather texts, films and artworks that have inspired artists, it also puts new installations and special editions on display, and offers a stage for concerts, workshops, encounters and interventions.
