Drift

dance
18—19.10.2013

Many meanings

The word ‘drift’ is found in phrases meaning ‘to float off’ and ‘to be cast adrift’, and in Dutch it also refers to ‘anger’ and ‘zeal’. Cindy Van Acker makes use of the word’s many meanings in this new duet. First, body language is dictated by ‘drift’ as a demanding and mechanical force. Then Drift evokes the fundamental nature of the body and the senses and brings us to the physicality of the other: identifying with or completely immersing oneself in the other. Ultimately, Drift ends as a composition that exhausts by its fatality, a sort of controlled chaos: ‘drift’ as anger.

In Van Acker’s work, body language, lighting and sound design are closely related. For the scenography of Drift she once again works with Victor Roy.

• Cindy Van Acker has danced with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and other companies. In the 90s she began her own career in contemporary dance. In 2005 Romeo Castellucci invited her to the Venice Biennale. Her work has also been staged at the Avignon Festival. She has previously appeared at Kaaitheater with Diffraction and Nixe + Obtus.
