De verbeelding van het landschap heeft een lange kunsthistorische en filosofische traditie. Maar hoe verhouden we ons tot smeltende ijskappen, omgekapte wouden en uitstervende diersoorten? Het verlangen naar de ‘wildheid’ van de natuur wordt vandaag van zijn laatste romantische zweem ontdaan. Hoe gaat de mens om met deze ‘nieuwe’ onbeheersbaarheid? Kunnen we onze esthetische en ethische positie herbepalen met bescheidenheid als centraal begrip?

In de namiddagsessies van Burning Ice brengen we kunstenaars, wetenschappers en cultuurcritici samen. Ze gaan met elkaar en met het publiek in gesprek over het thema van de dag en de rol die kunst kan spelen in dit alles. Moderator van deze gesprekken is criticus, dramaturg en curator Jeroen Peeters.
Herman Parret – Sublime ice landscapes in the visual arts
The sublime experience of the deserted ice landscape met the romantic desire for the wild and became a topos in the arts, though changing in meaning over time. From Gustave Doré over Robert Smithson’s land art to contemporary artists aware of global warming’s impact: their poetics are closely connected to the aesthetics of the sublime, in which man feels the limits of his own imagination.

Martin Drenthen – The Wildness of Melting Ice
Our relation to nature is deeply ambiguous. Fascinated as we are by the limits of our agency, we are interested in nature to the extent that it escapes our control. We are searching for unspoilt nature and even building new wilderness, driven by a desire for authentic experiences of wildness. Today, our desire for the wild is challenged by the uncanny reality of global warming: how much romanticism can we afford ourselves when confronted with the ‘new’ uncontrollability of melting polar ice?
Martin Drenthen is als milieufilosoof verbonden aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

De impact van onze eetgewoonten op de planeet is gigantisch. Het ‘industrial food complex’ dat we in het leven hebben geroepen om onze honger te stillen is een van de grootste boosdoeners inzake klimaatverandering. We nodigen vijf ‘andersdenkers’ uit om te koken en hun verhaal te vertellen.
Oxfam / Fair Trade geeft de aftrap. Als we het over Fair Trade of eerlijke handel hebben, denken we automatisch aan arbeidsomstandigheden en eerlijke prijzen. Dat er ook een heleboel ecologische voorwaarden gekoppeld worden aan een Fair Trade-label, is minder gekend.

lezing/film Sinds 2001 neemt fotograaf David Buckland elk jaar kunstenaars, wetenschappers, journalisten, enz. mee op een avontuurlijk expeditie naar de Noordpool met de schoener Noorderlicht. De zeilboot dient als laboratorium voor de zoektocht naar een cultureel en artistiek antwoord op de klimaatverandering. David Buckland brengt enkele van zijn reisgenoten-artiesten mee naar Brussel om hun fascinerende verhaal te vertellen. Zie ook het parcours Time’s Up & www.capefarewell.com |

performance/installatie Anouk De Clercq [Brussel] - Kernwasser Wunderland Kernwasser Wunderland opens up a deserted landscape in a pregnant environment, a biotope subject to specific laws ans its own ecology filled according to the intuitive logic of the unconscious and the imaginery. The basis for the contact is the great nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in April 1986. As a consequence of the greater danger of radiation the whole area was declared inaccessible ans was closed off with fencing and checkpoints. The radiation cannot be smelt or tasted, only a geigercounter can confirm its presence. This abandonment and brooding emptiness inspired the artist to refelct on nature and technology, in a fusion of sensual sound and image of both digital and natural worlds. |

Jennifer Baichwal - Manufactured landscapes Canada, 2007, 83 min. Documentaire over het werk van fotograaf Edward Burtynsky. Zijn foto’s tonen de verwoestende impact van de industrialisering op de natuur. De film volgt Burtynsky op een reis door China, waar hij de gevolgen fotografeert van de recente industriële revolutie. |
