Salon: The Heritage of Bauhaus

Enjoy compelling conversations with performing artists, curators and academics in a relaxed atmosphere. More names will be added to the salons, keep an eye on the website!

Historical backdrop of Performatik19 is the Bauhaus movement, which emerged 100 years ago. A number of Bauhaus principles have become deeply relevant again: the cross-fertilization between disciplines, the status of the author and the collective, the arts academy as an artist community, artisanry versus mass production, bringing art closer to everyday life, and the relationship between bodies and space as fundament for the development of new worldviews. During this salon, Alex Arteaga, Vladimir Miller, An Fonteyne, Radouan Mriziga and Ula Sickle will discuss these principles, and how they influence their practice. Pieter T'Jonck moderates the conversation. To start off, Veronique Boone offers an introduction on the Bauhaus movement.

•Alex Arteaga’s research integrates aesthetic and philosophical practices relating to aesthetics, the emergence of sense, meaning and knowledge, and the relationships between architecture and the environment through phenomenological and enactivist approaches.

• Vladimir Miller works as an artist, researcher, scenographer and dramaturge. His practice aims at re-negotiating habitual modes of spatial production within ad-hoc groups and institutional environments by using fragility as a building principle.

• An Fonteyne graduated from Ghent University. Together with Philippe Viérin and Jitse van den Berg she established Brussels based noAarchitecten in 2000. Currently the office works on the restauration and extension of the Steen, Antwerps oldest building and they were selected to design the ambitious Kanal - Centre Pompidou in Brussels - together with Sergison Bates architects (London) and EM2N (Zurich). Before joining the ETH An Fonteyne taught at TU Delft and was professor at Hasselt University.

• The choreographer and dancer Radouan Mriziga (Morocco, 1985) studied dance in Marrakesh and Tunisia and continued his career at PARTS in Brussels. Since 2014 he has been supported by Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre. From 2017 to 2021 Radouan Mriziga is an artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater.

• Ula Sickle is a choreographer and performer based in Brussels. From a background in contemporary dance, she works across disciplines and in collaboration with artists in other domains such as the visual arts, contemporary music or architecture. She studied in Toronto and Paris, before attending PARTS. In 2018 she had a residency at WIELS, and she is regularly featured in the Kaaitheater programme.

• Jozef Wouters is an independent artist and scenographer in residence with Damaged Goods. He initiates projects, using his Decoratelier in Molenbeek (Brussels) as a base. Decoratelier Jozef Wouters functions as an accessible workplace for artists, where there is room for both set designers and audiences, as well as cross-disciplinary collaborations and social experiment.
