bodies of knowledge (BOK)

miscellaneous
11.09—11.12.2021

BOK is a place where people can learn from each other.
Things one usually does not learn, told by voices that are not always heard,
from different parts of society and the world.
In BOK we exchange knowledge that feeds a more just and humane society.
It is a space to listen, to ask, to connect.

BOK welcomes life experts rather than professional authorities.

How can you create a safe space in public space for the exchange of various forms of repressed or underexposed knowledge? How can we challenge the hierarchy of public debates and arrive at a more horizontal, fair and inclusive society? These are the starting points of bodies of knowledge (BOK), an alternative school, that stays in the same spot in the city for a few weeks or months, and then moves on again.

From September 18, BOK will be installed in the center of Brussels for three months. You can take part in a free program every week and exchange knowledge that has no or not enough visibility in school, media or mainstream institutions: how to defend yourself in the public space, survive and live with little money, raise children in a feminist way, care using your hands, have less fear?…

Every Saturday there will be five discussion topics on the programme, discover them every week at bodiesofknowledge.be. Everyone is welcome to join: let yourself be guided by a topic you are personally involved in or concerned about.

• Sarah Vanhee is an artist, performer and author. Her interdisciplinary work moves between public space and the institutional art field. She has worked in prisons, living rooms, open spaces, theatres, conference rooms, etc. She previously appeared in the Kaaitheater programme with the lecture performance collected screams, and the documentary film The Making of Justice, shot in a prison.

•  BOK is a loose collective of people who live in Brussels and are interested in the underexposed knowledge that lives in the city. They meet the 'bodies of knowledge' that speak in the tent, and help determine what knowledge is on the programme, and who speaks. For the period in 1000 Brussels, the core team of BOK consists of Flore Herman, Damla Ekin Tokel, Jean-Baptiste Polge, assisted by Nadia Mharzi, Nouha Mhamdi, Sarah Vanhee and Luisa Marc. Previously, BOK was present in Anderlecht and Schaarbeek.
